DUBAI, UAE (February 10, 2024) - Several Baseball United players, including Baseball United Co-Owner, Robinson Cano, made an impact in Miami, Florida for the annual Series del Caribe (Caribbean Series). Serie del Caribe is Latin America’s largest multinational tournament, bringing together the respective champions of professional baseball leagues from Dominican Republic, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Curacao, Nicaragua, and Panama.
In addition to Cano (Dominican Republic), six other Baseball United’s players participated in this year’s tournament including Didi Gregorius (Curacao), Andrelton Simmons (Curacao), Dwight Smith Jr (Puerto Rico), Severino Gonzalez (Panama), Hernan Perez (Venezuela), and Tiago Da Silva (Venezuela).
The seven teams faced off in a round-robin style tournament over the last two weeks, culminating in last night’s championship match between Venezuela and the Dominican Republic. The Venezuelan team - Tiburones de La Guaria - took home the victory, outlasting the Dominican Tigres del Licey, 3-0 to secure their 8th Caribbean Series title.
Cano played for the Dominican Republic’s champion, Tigres del Licey, Gregorius and Simmons played for the Curacao Suns, Gonzalez played for Panama’s Federales de Chiriquí, Smith Jr played for Puerto Rico’s top team, Criollos de Caguas, and Perez and Da Silva played for Venezuela. In the championship game, Perez hit a triple, accounted for an RBI, and scored a run helping lead his team to victory. Cano went 3-3 at the plate hitting a double and two singles in the losing effort.
“It was an incredible experience watching our players shine on the international stage,” said John Miedreich, Vice Chairman and Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations at Baseball United. “Not only did they showcase their talent and passion for the game, but they also reinforced the growth of international baseball. Together, we have an amazing opportunity to inspire more and more baseball fans all across the world. Congratulations to all the players and teams, and, of course, felicidades to the Champions, Tiburones de La Guaira.”
Baseball United began play in Dubai last November with its inaugural All-Star Showcase, the first professional baseball games in the history of the region. The event was broadcast in 127 countries, reaching 200 million households. The league’s ownership group now includes 15 MLB legends, including Barry Larkin, Mariano Rivera, Adrian Beltre, Felix Hernandez, Robinson Cano, Ryan Howard, and Albert Pujols. The league is scheduled to announce its 2024 plans later this year.
“This experience was truly unforgettable,” said 2024 Serie del Caribe Champion, Tiago Da Silva. “Representing Venezuela and winning alongside my teammates was an honor beyond words. This tournament is an example of the power of international baseball. I’m hopeful our Baseball United team can learn from the success of the Caribbean Series and try to capture some of this amazing energy in our own league in the Middle East.”
